Philip Browne: saving the retail world
An affluent oil enginneer who gave up travelling the world to follow his dream of setting up a men’s fashion boutique and revolutionisng fashion in Norwich. In the 80’s and 90’s Philip Browne Menswear became renowned for stocking high-end and sometimes quirky and outrageous catwalk style garments from now international designers Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier and Alexander McQueen. Philip continues to be synonymous with experimenting with new and up and coming designers.
At the heart of the business is good old-fashioned service, but Philip puts time and investment into ecommerce. He’s keen to point out however, that technology is not a tool to “save the retail world”.
Community is also important to Philip and he’s a leading figure in the vibrant and independent shopping quarter, the Norwich Lanes. Last year the Lanes won the Great British High Street of the Year award for its ability to innovate, collaborate and adapt to changing consumer habits.
